Good afternoon, all.
If we have not yet become acquainted, then please, allow me to introduce myself. I am Sebastian Michaelis, another recently arrived Outsider, and most pertinent for why I make this address today, recently employed on LILITH’s base here in Neo-Tokyo. My official title is the kitchen manager for the cafeteria, but as needs must, I have taken on some additional responsibilities. I may not be in service to my lord here, but I still feel it important to best offer my skill as a butler.
First, on matters of food.
I am attempting to improve the menu on offer in the cafeteria, and I hope that anyone that has stopped by to try the improved offerings in recent weeks has enjoyed them. However, I would very much like to expand such offerings. If there is a particular dish that you find yourself missing, please, do let me know. I will endeavor to recreate it with your assistance, though I can make no guarantees. If you have a recipe I can follow, all the better.
Second, on matters of facility maintenance.
While our automated services are adequate, I do believe that the order and cleanliness of the base could be improved. Thus, the additional responsibilities I have taken on. If you find any part of the base in disrepair or would perhaps like your personal quarters cleaned regularly, please let me know. It would be my pleasure to do so, as a tidy home makes for happier people.
If you would like a full list of services I offer, I would be glad to provide it. I simply fear that this is already a rather long announcement.
Thank you very much for your attention. Do have a wonderful day.

Oh, why the interest in what I think is good for the soul? I'm hardly the expert here.

Suffering is a part of being alive, and anyone who tried too sell you something different is lying.
[ The royal you in this case ]
no subject
Need you drape yourself in such misery, though? To have it go so far as refusing an offer for just a bit of tidying up seems excessive. You speak like the stakes are much higher than such a trifle.
no subject
[ This time, he isn't even talking about his real job, he really does mean the butlering now. ]
And I know what kind of blindness comes from looking the other way, and life being just that easy. It's so easy to forget how everyone else does not have the same, when you are waited on hand and foot.
no subject
Maybe having someone at your beck and call is inherently selfish?
Though I would argue it is not so bad to be selfish. I am content, so what harm is there?
no subject
[ running his hands through his hair, the escalation is so tempting but he knows better. He's an angry man, and giving Sebastian more ammunition is a bad idea.he already has a full clip. ]
The harm, as you say it, manifests in that we outsiders are already fairly blind to what's going on outside in the compound. You want to add more reason for them to stay right where they are, and have everything handed to them here.
I, on the other hand, want to focus on empowering real people, not outsiders.

Dw about it ]

Perhaps it is my own failing, in that case. I am not so worldly as to easily consider such things. Bringing a single person a bit of fulfillment is an easier goal to accomplish than empowering a group...
But it is the Outsiders who are tasked with such a monumental thing as staving off the invasion of kaiju. Are they not real enough for that alone?
no subject
[ he slides that one in there for free! 🤭 ]
They don't live on the ground, in the muck with the rest of us. LILITH has summoned a great deal of powerful individuals. But what happens when we are gone? Do we solve the Kaiju? Or are we stemming the tide while the people here learn dependency on us? Constantly being given the answer without learning to do anything for themselves.
It takes the eye of someone mundane to see the problem in that, perhaps. Just like you are with your "butlering"; the Outsiders are doing the exact same thing. Making them dependent on someone to solve the problems for them. Giving them comfort without earning it.

It is a viewpoint I do not tend to consider, but only because far be it for me to have such lofty considerations. I admittedly leave such things to my master, for it is his place to do so more than a humble butler.
no subject
[ Sighs... ]
Ah, yes, your master. An earl, wasn't it? Does nobility truly look upon the people and want to see them rise to prominence? I have never met a noble that can look beyond the length of their own nose.
[ He and Ciel really would get on like a house on fire. They'd hate each other but... also they would hate Sebastian. 🤝 It's truly actually a good thing he'll never be around. ]
no subject
In fact, he is a bit more forgiving than you may think. Between you and I, the tax he asks is much lower than his peers. He secretly has a soft heart.
Well, that, and he is a modern fellow. He sees success in industry, so he has taken up business and manufacture as primary income for the estate rather than simply the tradition of nobility.
no subject
Well, isn't that just like a kindly lord? I'm sure that's insulated his people from the ravages of nature and disaster, has he?
And I'm sure those said industrialists work quite well with him to, yes? Personally, as an industrialist myself, I would hate for someone to take a portion of the profit from me and mine. You understand, I'm sure. Seeing someone take credit for all of your hard work.
no subject
Perhaps it works a bit differently in London, but it is a partnership, really. Without my lord's commission, they would have nothing to make, after all. It is hardly taking a portion of profit when you are dependent on direction to make that profit in the first place, I would say.
no subject
Again, this may be my personal opinion, but if I were to need a "commission" to operate my factories, I would have never gotten off the ground. Maybe they'd find it a bit more profitable if they broke their chains from nobility.
[ out here speedrunning the tail end of the industrial revolution ]

What did your factories produce, if I may?
no subject
[ Silco will project his issues onto Any Society. ]
My factories produced what we needed to survive in the fissures. The power that motivates us forward. Ah, but I am one of many where I am from. We truly have it all in Zaun.
no subject
Ah, well, no matter, I suppose. There is no common ground between that and tools for survival, correct?
no subject
[ He laughs a little bit. ]
Maybe you'll see what we make one of these days. Let's just call it liquid courage, shall we?
[ Sebastian, soon enough, will probably put two and two together with what he keeps in his room. ]
no subject
Spirits, then? Well, I suppose I cannot be surprised, actually. Making the production of liquor quite industrial seems like it would have happened more quickly, now that I consider it.
Clearly, you are very proud of it.
no subject
[ He lied. ]
And, well, yes. It is rather common. At least for everyone outside of the undercity. You must understand, where I am from, we must do everything for ourselves.
i'm using this icon twice in a row on purpose because it's just "passive aggressive ok grandpa" smil
To wit: I offer my sympathies for it, because it does seem difficult. Your passion for it is obvious, but as is a bit of a chip on your shoulder about it.
HELP
If I wanted sympathy, I would ask. Don't bother. In fact, I'm proud of the resilience who we are. Only the truly strong can flourish despite everything, after all.
[ Oh he's SO MAD... This actually takes a bit bc he had to like. go smoke a cigar ]
no subject
[ :) ]
But please, excuse me for saying so. I commend you for your resilience, naturally. It is very impressive! How wonderful it is that the modern world allows people to rise above the circumstances of their birth through the power of innovation and industry.
[ :) ]
Regardless, I am sure that I have kept your time enough at this point. There are dishes to be made and plenty more to be washed. Please do stop by the kitchens at some point, if it pleases you. I would be happy to serve you.
grinds his teeth so hard his teeth crack tbh
[ >:( ]
I'll handle my own food, thank you. You know, the blood?
[ >:( ]
But thank you for the very kind offer. You're quite the congenial new Ouitsider, aren't you?
